Internships, apprenticeships, articleships, training and unpaid work are not counted toward the work experience calculation.

GMAT Eligibility

A valid GMAT score is mandatory. For the 2027-28 batch, the earliest accepted GMAT test date is August 1, 2023, as the score must fall within the 36-month period preceding August 1, 2026.

The minimum requirement is a 50th-percentile GMAT score, and this percentile requirement applies regardless of whether the candidate took the GMAT Classic or GMAT Focus Edition. Only test-centre GMAT scores are valid; Online GMAT (take-home) scores are not accepted.

What GMAT Score Is Required for IIM Calcutta MBAEx?

IIM Calcutta requires applicants to have a GMAT score at or above the 50th percentile. However, this is a minimum eligibility requirement and not a score that guarantees admission. In fact, there is no score at which admission can be guaranteed, since the final decisions are made with a holistic evaluation of all applications. The institute states that the average GMAT performance of the batch enrolled in AY 2026-27 was above the 85th percentile.

GMAT BenchmarkScore / RequirementGMAT Focus Edition Score*GMAT Classic Score*
Official Minimum50th percentile565 (IIMC Official Figure)600 (IIMC Official Figure)
Recent Enrolled Batch BenchmarkAverage above the 85th percentile

*Calculated using GMAC’s Official Concordance Table.

IIM Calcutta uses the applicable GMAC concordance table when interpreting the minimum percentile requirement. The institute cites 600 on GMAT Classic and 565 on GMAT Focus as examples corresponding to the 50th percentile in the July 2025 concordance table. These should therefore not be treated as permanent fixed raw-score cutoffs.

The recent batch average being above the 85th percentile also shows the distinction between the minimum GMAT requirement and the profile of students actually enrolled.

IIM Calcutta MBAEx Selection Process

The selection process takes place across three stages.

Stage 1 - Application: Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements can apply for the programme. Eligible applicants are invited to participate in the interview process, subject to the number of candidates called in each round being at IIM Calcutta's discretion.

Stage 2 - WAT and PI: The interview process consists of a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI).

Stage 3 - Final Selection: Following Round 1, a limited number of offers are made to candidates at the top of the rank list. Scores of the remaining Round 1 candidates remain valid through Round 2, and these candidates are treated as waitlisted. After Round 2, IIM Calcutta creates a pooled rank list consisting of the Round 1 waitlist and Round 2 interviewees before making the remaining offers.

IIM Calcutta MBAEx Selection Weightage

The Personal Interview is the largest individual component of the final selection score at 30%, followed by GMAT at 25%. Together, GMAT and PI contribute 55% of the final composite score.

The selection criteria make it important to look beyond the minimum GMAT requirement. Academic performance, work experience, WAT, PI and diversity all contribute to the final composite score.

Since GMAT carries a significant portion of your application as the second-most important criterion, it is definitely one of the strongest suits that all candidates can aim to improve.
