The GMAT Focus Edition is the latest version of the GMAT exam, introduced by GMAC in 2023. It is shorter, more streamlined, and more business-focused than the previous version. The test duration is just under 2 hours 15 minutes, and it places greater emphasis on critical thinking, data literacy, and decision-making - key skills for your B-school journey.
Preparation time varies by individual, but most candidates require 2 to 4 months of consistent study to reach a competitive score. Factors like your target score, familiarity with the test format, and availability of time each day will impact your timeline.
The GMAT Focus Edition consists of three scored sections (each 45 minutes long): Quantitative Reasoning (21 Q), Verbal Reasoning (23 Q), and Data Insights (20 Q). You may also take an optional 10-minute break after the first or second section.
Note: There is no geometry or sentence correction in the new GMAT Focus format. For more information, download the complete GMAT Syllabus here!
The Total Score is calculated using a scaled combination of all three sections, with each contributing equally. To understand how the scores vary by section, check out our GMAT Score Calculator!
The key to defining a good GMAT score lies in understanding the expectations of your target MBA program. Start by examining the historical median or average GMAT score for that program and calculate the percentile position of this benchmark. This sets the stage for determining whether your score aligns with the program's expectations or if it needs improvement. For example, for a program where the average score is typically in the 95th percentile (around the 675 mark in the new scoring system), a 99th percentile score - i.e. a 715+ plus score on the new GMAT - would be considered great.
You can take the GMAT Focus Edition either at a test center or online. The online version has the same format and scoring, though some schools may show preference for the test center version of the exam over the online format. You can take the GMAT once every 16 days, up to 5 times in a 12-month period. Always plan your retakes strategically, based on readiness and application timelines.
Your GMAT scores are valid for 5 years from the test date. You can also view your entire score history for the past 10 years, though only valid scores can be used in applications.
